Warning Systems

While common sense and preparedness are the foundation of being ready for all emergencies, there are systems in place to help you receive critical information in the event of a large scale crisis. Note that some of these tools are “worst case” solutions that would only be used when sharing information is critical to the health of the community.

  • First off, monitor our office’s Twitter and Facebook pages. Many updates will be posted there first.

  • In addition, often info & updates will be shared with local San Juan County media and news-blogs.

  • For truly critical situations, local government has the ability to send text alerts to all cell phones in a given area (WEA). You do NOT need to sign up for this system. This system is only used in truly dire circumstances.

  • Many island residents have signed up for our “Island Alerts” tool that allows emails and texts to be sent to those registered in advance. Sign up HERE.

  • The Emergency Alert System is a tool that allows government to send alerts to radio and TV stations. It also sends messages that can be picked up by EAS compatible weather radios. There are many phone apps that also receive and share these alerts.
